Arabic drummers in Dubai are booked above all for the zaffa, the drum procession that walks the bride and groom, or the groom, into the wedding hall. The group plays large frame drums and a bass drum, often with a tabla and a singer, while guests clap and cheer. A zaffa entrance usually runs about 10 to 15 minutes. Arabic drummers also play Arabic nights, National Day events, corporate galas and Ramadan and Eid evenings in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Price: the cost depends on the number of drummers, whether a singer or dancers join, the length of the slot, travel and the date. See how much it costs to hire drummers.
What happens in a zaffa
The drummers gather at the door before the couple arrives. On the cue from the host or the band, they start the rhythm and walk in slowly in front of the couple. Frame drums are held high and struck in unison, the bass drum keeps the pulse, and the singer leads the wedding songs. Guests stand, clap and film. At the stage or the dance floor, the drummers circle the couple, finish with a big ending, and hand the room over to the band or the DJ.
Drums you will hear
Frame drums (daf or tar). Large round drums with a single skin, held up in one hand and struck with the other. They are the look and sound of the zaffa.
Tabla (darbuka). The goblet drum of Arabic music, sharp and fast, often played by the lead drummer.
Bass drum. A big double headed drum on a strap, played with a beater, for the deep pulse.
Mazhar and riq. A frame drum with jingles and a small tambourine, used by some groups.
Styles of zaffa
Families in Dubai come from across the Arab world, and the zaffa changes with them. Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian weddings often pair the zaffa with a dabke line. Egyptian zaffa groups may add a mizmar or a belly dancer. Emirati and Gulf weddings may book a heritage troupe for the groom's arrival in the majlis. Tell us your family's style, and the team suggests drummers who know the songs.
Two halls, two entrances
Many Arabic and Khaleeji weddings run a ladies' hall and a men's hall or majlis. The zaffa is often done twice, once in each. Send both timings so the drummers can plan the route and the break.
Arabic drummers with other acts
A zaffa often leads into a dabke troupe, a belly dance or an Arabic band. A common running order is a zaffa arrival, a show during dinner, then a band or a DJ for the rest of the night. See wedding drummers for the full night, and tabla players if you want a single drummer to play with a singer or a DJ.
Ramadan and Eid
During Ramadan, Arabic drummers, zaffa groups and traditional musicians are booked for iftar and suhoor events, Ramadan tents and Eid celebrations. Performances start after iftar and are calmer than at a wedding. Book early, as these dates fill fast.
